The Koziol lab is seeking a highly motivated research assistant interested in investigating fundamental questions in biology related to novel DNA and RNA modifications.
OUR RESEARCH & LAB
The Koziol lab is identifying, characterizing and studying the function of DNA and RNA modifications. We use cell lines and mouse animal models, combine molecular biology, third-generation highthroughput sequencing technologies and state-of-the-art mass spectrometry to study DNA and RNA modifications. We focus now on the brain, where many modifications seem to be particularly abundant and of functional importance.
Although we are based in Beijing, China, we are an international lab, in a world-class internationally oriented research institute, with a collaborative, interactive and dynamic team. Our working language is English, so Chinese knowledge is not required. We are generously core funded, have the newest and state-of-the-art equipment and technologies and benefit from our collaborations with China’s top universities and industries.
Our lab is strongly supported by our in-house core facilities, such as a bioinformatics group, mass spectrometry, FACS, imaging, genetic, viral, instrumentation, animal, animal behavior and medicinal chemistry core facilities. For more information about us visit www.DNALaboratory.org.
BENEFITS
Salary is based on experience and qualifications, and generous insurance and welfare benefits such as health insurance will be provided. We have strong administrative support who can assist with housing, visas and other personal matters.
Although an interest in doing a PhD in our lab in the future is not essential, we prefer applications from highly motivated and talented assistants who would like to later transition into one of our PhD programs, as our previous assistants have accomplished.
REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLICATION
The candidate must have or is about to obtain a Master degree in a relevant field, such as Biology, Neurobiology or Medicine. Candidates are required to have lab experience in molecular biology, be highly motivated, diligent and be able to work as part of a team.

About the Institute
Founded in March 2018 as a national scientific initiative, the Chinese Institute for Brain Research, Beijing (CIBR) mainly focuses on brain science and development of brain-like artificial intelligence technologies. Located in the "National Science and Technology Innovation Center" in Beijing, CIBR is designed as a top-tier research institute for conducting highly advanced, cutting edge, and break-through neuroscience research, and to educate future generations of neuroscientists to aid China and the world.
About the lab
The Wang Lab is interested in the homeostatic regulation of metabolism-related physiology and behavior. Our current research focuses on dissecting the neural circuitry of the anterior hypothalamus in rodents, with two major research focuses: 1) control of body temperature mediated by the preoptic area, and 2) the circadian clock mediated by the suprachiasmatic nucleus. Our long-term goal is to establish a mechanistic understanding of mammalian hibernation and its potential application in clinic.
Research in the Wang Lab is oriented around scientific questions, but not specific techniques. Modern neuroscience research benefits from the integration of multidisciplinary approaches; we thus employ a diverse set of experimental strategies in our research programs, including but not limited to electrophysiology, real-time imaging, optogenetics, neuronal tracing, single-cell RNA-seq, mass-spec, and animal behavior analysis. We are also actively involved in developing novel technologies for neuroscience research.

ABOUT KOZIOL LABORATORY
The Koziol Laboratory is part of CIBR, with the focus on discovering and studying novel DNA and RNA modifications and to investigate their role in the brain. Our goal is to make fundamental discoveries about the ‘building blocks of life’, namely DNA and RNA, to better understand complex brain functions. As a proof of principle, we have first discovered a novel DNA modification in vertebrate genomes, called methylated deoxyadenosine (Koziol et al., 2015). This finding opened entirely novel avenues for investigation and pioneered an exciting new area of biology. Therefore, in addition to studying this novel DNA modification that is now known to be important in the brain, the Koziol Laboratory is discovering and studying novel DNA and RNA modifications and investigate their role in the brain. Where possible, we explore how our discoveries can be exploited to improve human health.
The Koziol Laboratory combines molecular biology, bioinformatics, mass spectrometry and biochemistry to discover and study DNA and RNA modifications in the brain. We use human and mouse tissue culture as an in vitro model, human and mice tissues and mice as an in vivo model. We are an interactive, friendly, collaborative, international and dynamic research group that nurtures independent thinking and welcomes trying novel, often unconventional ideas. We speak English in the laboratory. We often collaborate with other scientists, not only locally, but have strong international links, in particular with scientists from the University of Cambridge, UK, and in the US. Overall, our laboratory offers terrific opportunities for personal and professional development.
